The Plumber’s Lesson: Flow and Blockages

As a plumber, I’ve learned that when a pipe is clogged, no matter how much water you put in, the flow stops.
A French drain doesn’t go directly to the main line: it must first filter and direct the water correctly. If debris, grease, or dirt accumulates in the pipe, the system stops working.

Who Blocks the Line?

In our spiritual life, we are often the ones blocking the flow of the Holy Spirit:

  • Grease represents our indifference toward God, our apathy in seeking His face and guidance.
  • Debris and buildup are our negative attitudes, disobedience, pride, resentment, fear, or bad habits.
  • Even when we have all spiritual tools —prayer, knowledge, words— if the heart isn’t clean and connected, the Spirit cannot flow freely.

Inner Cleaning: Preparing the Heart

God invites us to maintain a clean and aligned connection:

  • Examine our heart and our actions.
  • Confess what separates us from Him.
  • Renew our mind and spirit with His Word.

Just like in a well-constructed French drain, where the pipe is aligned, wrapped in geotextile, and surrounded by stone to allow water to reach the reservoir before going to dirt, in our lives the Spirit flows fully when the heart is clean and connected to the source: Jesus Christ. 💧✨

Allowing the Spirit to Flow

This lesson reminds us that nothing flows on its own: it depends on our willingness and inner cleanliness.
When we remove the grease of indifference, the debris of wrong attitudes, and the blockages of disobedience, the Spirit can fill our lives and overflow to others, bringing life, wisdom, and peace.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”Psalm 51:10
