Many congregations today are asleep. I’m not only talking locally, but globally. The number of members does not matter; what truly lacks is the manifestation of the Spirit, passion, and obedience. The church, which is the giant God placed on the earth, remains asleep in times of spiritual warfare, when it should rise to fulfill its purpose.
Causes for the Giant Being Asleep
Spiritual comfort – Many congregations have grown accustomed to routine, comfortable living, and the absence of sacrifice, forgetting that God calls us to be alert and active.
Lack of passion and living faith – The Word and prayer have become formalities, and the fire of the Spirit does not manifest as it should.
Influence of the world – Culture and worldly values dull the vision of the Kingdom, diverting God’s people from their purpose.
Disunity and apathy – When the members do not rise in unity, the giant loses strength and effectiveness.
Fear of confronting the truth – The discomfort of speaking and living the truth keeps the people passive.
Lack of love for souls – Many congregations focus on rituals, comfort, or internal activities, but have lost the passion to see the lost reached by God. Without genuine love for souls, the church remains asleep, without the drive to fulfill its purpose on earth.
Consequences of the Giant’s Sleep
Loss of spiritual impact – The church does not transform its environment as it should.
Stagnant members – Faith grows cold, character is not formed, and passion fades.
Missed opportunities – God’s work on earth is limited by the inactivity of His people.
Vulnerability to the enemy – Spiritual warfare is fought with less strength, leaving room for evil influence.
How to Awaken the Sleeping Giant
Genuine transformation – Every awakening must begin with a real change in the heart. Each member needs a personal encounter with God, sincere repentance, living faith, and obedience to the Holy Spirit. Only through this inner transformation do passion, unity, and power manifest in the congregation. Additionally, new believers must be guided toward this transformation through intentional and deep discipleship, ensuring that their faith is not superficial but solid and lived daily (2 Corinthians 5:17; Matthew 28:19-20).
Restore devotion and authentic faith – Activity does not replace passion for God. The congregation awakens when each member commits to prayer, the Word, and obedience (Matthew 22:37-38).
Preach the Word with power and clarity – Truth proclaimed boldly, with love and authority in Christ, awakens the people and confronts evil and sin (Acts 4:29-31).
Pray and fast as a community – Humbling together and seeking God strengthens the giant and opens paths where there was passivity before (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Activate members to fulfill their callings – Every believer has a vital role. The church rises when all serve, teach, and evangelize, fulfilling the purpose God gave them (Ephesians 4:11-13).
Seek unity and mutual edification – The strength of the congregation is in the cohesion of its members. Division and apathy keep the giant asleep; unity awakens it (Psalm 133:1).
Trust that God works through His people – All human effort without the Spirit of God is insufficient. True strength comes from recognizing our total dependence on Him (John 15:5).
Conclusion and Final Call
Brothers and sisters, the giant is asleep, but not all is lost. God can still raise His people, fill them with His Spirit, and ignite the passion that was dormant. With Jesus, all things are possible: the church can be light, salt, and a transformative force in a world that needs hope.
Let us not allow routine, fear, or comfort to continue numbing the giant. Let us seek God with all our hearts, teach and disciple new believers, pray, serve, and act boldly. The time to awaken has come!
Let us rise together, congregation, and allow God to do His marvelous work among us!
